The Michigan Trans Health Survey

The Michigan Trans Health Survey is a landmark initiative that provides invaluable insights into the health and well-being of transgender and gender diverse individuals in Michigan. Gender of MTHS Respondents

Respondents were asked to self-describe their gender identity, and 213 unique responses were received.
These were grouped into categories to visually present.

Additionally, approximately two-thirds of survey respondents were assigned female at birth and one-third male at
birth. Just under 5% are intersex.

Reasons for Delaying Care

Over 60% of participants delayed getting necessary healthcare within the previous 12 months. Fear of gender identity-based discrimination (46%), discomfort with body examination (38%), and inability to afford care (38%) were cited as reasons for delaying this care. In qualitative responses, participants commonly noted anxiety surrounding the process of scheduling appointments, uncertainty in navigating healthcare and insurance systems, and dismissive experiences with providers in the past.

Self-Reported Health

Survey participants were asked to rate their overall health and mental health from “poor” to “excellent.”
